Design Inquiry of Learning – between LX Design and Educational Design Research
LX design is a powerful emerging paradigm for professional practice in education. Likewise, Educational Design Research (EDR), aslo known as Design Based Research (DBR) is a powerful emerging paradigm for the scientific study and development of educational innovations. Despite the common theme of design, communication between these approaches is lacking; LX design often lacks scientific rigor, while EDR falls short in practical applicatability. The concept of Design Inquiry of Learning trys to bridge the two approaches, and at the same time offer a novel approach to the education of educational practitioners. Design Inquiry of Learning is the basis for the Learning Design Studio methodology, which has been successfully implemented in several MOOCs, courses, and multiple workshops.

The design studio: creating and maintaining teams of diverse talents for development across diverse disciplines
The advent of the Michigan State University Hub for Innovation in Learning and Technology generated some interesting challenges to our campus infrastructure, and very quickly “broke” some long standing workflows and processes. For the past year, the teams at the MSU Hub and MSU Information Technology worked to generate a process (with tools that we will share with anyone who is interested) that is more inclusive, transparent, and agile. From more purposely including students in projects and leadership, to developing a weekly rhythm for our workflow that allows time for creativity and public intellectual pursuits, to creating transparent, visible task boards and project intake and feedback processes.

Driving to Outcomes: Using frameworks to manage the complexity of designing experiences
Digital experiences are messy, meandering, and increasingly complicated journeys. However, in the world of Customer Experience (CX) design, an experience is simply how someone perceives their interactions with your company. A learning experience can then be described as how a learner perceives their interactions with your learning material. The thing about perceptions is that they can be measured and influenced. Ultimately this understanding can drive outcomes, even learning outcomes. So how do you drive learning outcomes? With a map – or to really get somewhere- with an Experience Framework. Learn about what UX & CX Designers are doing to drive customer experiences and see what we can apply to designing learning experiences.

Listen, look, learn and take the leap: developing a blended architecture studio
In this presentation Jolanda reflects on a seven year-long process of co-design that turned a brick and mortar studio into one of bits and bytes. She demonstrates how small experimental learning interventions initiated conversation with her learners, generated feedback and prompted design iterations that led to the implementation of the first blended part-time programme at her University.

Wayfinding with Kim Tairi
Innovative learning spaces in universities are often hidden away in faculty for “secret faculty things”. What if the library were to provide an innovative learning space that incorporates elements of the maker ethos, where the whole community can play and learn. Haere mai and welcome to Studio 55, experiential learning and creativity space for AUT community. A first – in an academic library in Aotearoa. Pulled together on a shoe-string budget with koha (expressions of gratitude), goodwill and aroha (empathy and understanding).

The Rigorous Whimsy Mindset
How might we choreograph a short story, remix a political party, sketchnote an equation, costume a scientific phenomenon, or hashtag a nutrition plan? Veteran classroom educator Amy Burvall believes intentional acts of creative expression enables deeper learning, turning the creative spirit into a force for authentic understanding.
